Abstract

In today's project management environment, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have the capacity to transform project performance measurement and enhancement. Conventional approaches to project performance measurement can be based on fixed metrics, human judgement and past performance data, which may not be entirely accurate or flexible. Big Data enables project managers to tap into the wealth of real-time data from multiple sources such as social media, project management software, sensors and IoT devices. Meanwhile, AI offers the ability to process these streams of data to detect trends and patterns that may be overlooked. This pairing improves decision-making, forecasts problems and optimises project schedules, budgets and resources. Leveraging predictive analytics and machine learning, AI can recommend interventions to enhance project outcomes and ensure projects are aligned with broader business strategies. The use of Big Data and AI also facilitates continuous performance monitoring, allowing for real-time project control and promoting a more proactive project management approach. This paper examines the effect of Big Data and AI on project performance management, outlines their uses, and assesses the advantages and drawbacks of using these new technologies in project management.
